- Description:
- A number of major American modernists frequented the White Mountains of New Hampshire in the first decades of the 20th century. In contrast with the 19th-century romantic-realists who painted the area, they did not see the White Mountains in terms of redemptive transcendence. These artists, from William and Marguerite Zorach to Canadian Lawren Harris, had their own unique cultural baggage. Their works reflected the debate between romanticism and modernism, and emphasized not what they saw but what they experienced.
