- Description:
- Between 1868 and 1870, Winslow Homer produced four paintings and a number of wood engravings of the White Mountains of New Hampshire. These works are an expression of the uncertainties of the American people as they tried to redefine themselves after the Civil War. They reflect the contradiction of the White Mountains as a wilderness and a bustling tourist site. They also make a statement about American identity and the changing roles of men and women.
