Description:
A number of 19th-century American artists created "intimate, meditative views" of the interior of New Hampshire's White Mountain forests as alternatives to earlier paintings of panoramic mountain vistas. The most notable of these artists was Albert Bierstadt. His works of the Civil War era stressed details of rocks, trees, leaves, and flowers. Albert and his brothers Charles and Edward also produced photographs of White Mountain forests. The Bierstadts and other artists of the period depicted decomposition and conflict in their works, but also introduced signs of revival and redemption.
