In the mid-19th century a number of American artists produced works depicting New Hampshire's White Mountains. These works reflected the values of the modern industrial world and the fervent patriotism that followed the American victory over Mexico. Mount Washington was an especially popular symbol. The works of John Frederick Kensett, Benjamin Champney, and Currier and Ives in particular inspired many other artists. Their art suggested a harmonious agreement of humanity and nature, and was consistent with prevailing American beliefs of freedom and national virtue under God's guidance.
