- Description:
- Rockingham Park racetrack, established in Salem, New Hampshire, had a significant impact on the economy and politics of New Hampshire for at least thirty years following its establishment in 1933. The track was a major source of revenue for the state government, which depended on gambling money more than any other state, including Nevada. Lou Smith, founder and general manager of the park, wielded enormous influence. Many of New Hampshire's public officials had links with the park during Smith's era. In 1967, approximately one million people visited Rockingham Park, making it one of the top tourist attractions in New England.
