Description:
Daniel Webster's opposition to the War of 1812 had a considerable and lasting effect on his political career. Webster was first elected to the US Senate from New Hampshire in 1812. As a Federalist, and a disciple of George Washington, Webster opposed the alliance with Napoleonic France and the invasion of Canada. Although he never advocated rebellion, Webster's strong opposition to the war enabled his opponents to question his loyalty for many years, and probably cost him any opportunity of being elected president of the United States.
