- Description:
- In 1946, the Brooklyn Dodgers sent two newly signed African-American baseball players to the Dodgers' new minor league team in Nashua, New Hampshire, making the Nashua Dodgers the first integrated professional baseball team in the United States since the 1880's. The Dodgers' organization planned the move carefully to minimize the likelihood of failure. The players, Don Newcombe and Roy Campanella, endured taunting from players on other teams, but were well-received in Nashua, thanks to their exceptional play and their irreproachable behavior. Newcombe and Campanella went on to enjoy outstanding major league baseball careers.
