Description:
In the early 20th century people devised a variety of schemes to combat the perceived decline of rural New England. Between 1913 and 1921, a group of wealthy property owners in Peterborough, New Hampshire, promoted a number of measures to revitalize their community and downtown. One 1921 plan proposed to reuse the Phoenix Mill, a brick factory built in 1829 and little used after 1900, as a high school. Concerned residents bought the mill in 1916 and offered it to the town for use as a high school, but the town rejected the proposal. After the owners demolished the mill, the site remained vacant until 1951.
