- Description:
- Laban Ainsworth's 76-year ministry at Jaffrey, New Hampshire, during 1782-1858 encompassed many aspects of a rural ministry in the period. Over the years he was at Jaffrey, Ainsworth raised a family and attended to community affairs. His wry sense of humor enabled him to stay on reasonable terms with those with whom he had theological differences. Ainsworth witnessed the state's passage, in 1819, of legislation to end compulsory religious taxes. This was followed, in 1822, by Jaffrey's decision to allow all sects to share the meetinghouse. In 1829, after 47 years as the sole minister of Jaffrey's town church, Ainsworth received an assistant. His assistants eventually led the congregation, but Ainsworth remained officially the pastor until his death in 1858.
