Description:
John Burgum, an ornamental painter trained in Birmingham, England, immigrated to the United States in 1850. Burgum's diaries and other papers provide unique insight into his life and career. He worked for many years for the Abbot-Downing Company of Concord, New Hampshire, specializing in the decorating of vehicles, most notably a type of carriage known as the Concord coach. These sturdy vehicles saw use all over the United States and in other countries. Coach painting was complicated and required the skill of an accomplished artisan to protect and decorate these vehicles to meet a high aesthetic standard.
