- Description:
- Black settlement in rural New Hampshire was widespread in the period after the American Revolution. Evidence of rural black settlement is scattered and incomplete, but research on blacks in five New Hampshire communities - Newport, Croyden, Goshen, Sutton, and Warner - provides some indications of where these early black residents came from, their backgrounds, occupations, participation in the lives of their communities, where they went after leaving the region, why their numbers diminished, whether they maintained connections with blacks elsewhere, and, finally, how they were remembered.
