- Description:
- In 1779, twenty black slaves petitioned the New Hampshire General Assembly for their freedom. In effect, they asked the legislature to abolish slavery in New Hampshire. Five of the twenty petitioners were well-known. These twenty represented a cross section of Portsmouth's Revolutionary-era slave community. The stories of some are based on the identities of their white masters but nonetheless provide a rare glimpse into both New Hampshire's mercantile elite and middle-class craftsmen's milieu.
