Description:
The article focuses on 18th century school teacher and notable American calligraphic artist George Melville. He is known for his decorative pieces of Americana, especially his illustrated family genealogies created in New England. The author considers the known body of Melville's work and other archival records to determine that he taught in Candia, Raymond, Wolfborough, and Farmington, New Hampshire during the period from the 1780s to 1800. The author proposes that Melville was born in Fife, Scotland before 1755 and probably immigrated first to Massachusetts before settling in New Hampshire. Examples of Melville's family trees created for people including the Honorable John Dudley, Esquire; Samuel Batcheldor; and Thomas Mathes, are presented.
