Description:
The article briefly describes the work by Caroline Gardner Bartlett ("Sister Beatrice") to raise funds for relief organizations operating in Europe during World War I. Her fundraising efforts led her to travel between the United States and Europe, and within Europe during the war. To convey that she was a non-combatant relief-worker, but to prevent confusion with religious orders also providing relief, she donned a purple habit. Her charitable efforts were cut short when she was accused of being a German spy by multiple sources. She eventually cleared her name, but the incident tarnished her reputation.
