Transcription of the diary of Freedom (Fredom) Sanborn (1841-1873). Date of the transcription is unknown; location of the original diary is unknown. The diary portion is preceded by a very brief history of the Sanborn family. Also included are copies of papers relating to Sanborn's disability, his pension and his widow's application for a pension. The diary begins in 1862 with Sanborn's enlistment in the 12th N.H. Regiment; most entries are brief, and concern his day-to-day activities. Sanborn fought at Fredericksburg (with "the shot and shell flying around our ears rather faster than was agreeable") and the Battle of Chancellorsville (May 3, 1863 "went in and stayed till we lost all of our Officers") and mentions other skirmishes. On Thursday, July 2, 1863, Sanborn was wounded at the Battle of Gettysburg ("got wounded in the neck and taken prisoner") and ended up in a Union hospital ("worse than a prison"). Sanborn was discharged from the Army in 1864.
