- Description:
- Similar to a commonplace book, an index rerum was intended to be an subject index of things found in the owner's reading over the years. This is the 11th edition of John Todd's Index rerum published in Northampton, Mass. by J. H. Butler in 1846. The owner of this Index rerum has used it for genealogical notes on Barnstead families, ignoring the alphabetical headings. The owner has included a name index at the back of the book and has hand-numbered the pages. He has not indicated the source of his data. There appears to have been a previous owner of the book who used it for the purpose it was intended. On pages 238 - 251 are entries in much different penmanship, that include notes on on Daniel Webster, the Maid of Orleans and the Lollards. Hillsgrove died in 1966; the flyleaf of the book is dated 1914.
