Description:
Helen Albee, a summer resident of Tamworth, New Hampshire, established the Abnkee Rug Industry there a few years after she and her husband purchased property in Tamworth in the 1890's. Albee rejected most traditional designs as crude and created new designs for hooked rugs reflecting the Arts and Crafts aesthetic. Albee promoted the rugs energetically through expositions and her four books and numerous articles about her life and work in New Hampshire. Although she offended some of her workers with her comments about local skills, Albee found enough willing workers that she was able to maintain the company until her husband's death in 1916.
