Description:
Women initiated and led the Arts and Crafts revival in New Hampshire between 1897 and 1931. New York-trained designer Helen Rickey Albee established the Abnkee Rug Industry in and around Tamworth in 1897, and Frances C. Lyons Houston worked with the woven rug producers known as Mothers' and Daughters' Industries of Plainfield. Sandwich Home Industries evolved out of the efforts of Mary Coolidge in the mid-1920's to showcase the arts and crafts of the women in Sandwich. These and other initiatives led to the incorporation in 1931 of the League of New Hampshire Arts and Crafts to promote home industries and educate people in crafts techniques and artistic design.
