- Description:
- At the beginning of the 20th century, New Hampshire experienced a significant revival of craft activity, led largely by summer residents. This revival reflected the growing popularity of crafts in the United States at the time and the significant number of summer residents in New Hampshire, many of whom took great interest in the locales where they summered. Women such as poet Celia Thaxter (1835-94), of the Isles of Shoals, spearheaded the crafts revival, which helped considerably to expand employment opportunities for women in the state.
