Description:
Alden Partridge, founder of the academy in Norwich, Vermont, that became Norwich University, conducted a number of excursions into the White Mountains of New Hampshire between 1811 and 1824. His activities bear witness to a growing general interest in the region and changing attitudes about the mountains' environment. Partridge and others were beginning to see the White Mountains as an outdoor laboratory and gymnasium well suited for both education and recreation that ordinary people could explore. By 1825 the White Mountains had become a focal point of tourist activity. Partridge's published accounts of his excursions no doubt contributed to a growing nationwide fascination with the White Mountains.
