- Description:
- Samuel Holland, a native of the Netherlands in the service of the British government, helped plan and oversee a major survey of the east coast of North America after the Seven Years' War (1756-63). Between 1764 and 1770, Holland and his team surveyed the waters of the St. Lawrence River and Gulf. Holland then moved south, and from 1770 to 1774 he made Piscataqua, New Hampshire, his headquarters while he had the coast of New England charted from Boston to Nova Scotia. In this period his team also made some of the best early maps of inland New Hampshire.
