Description:
From 1832 until 1900, Portsmouth, New Hampshire, played a major role in the stocking industry in the United States. The industry began in Portsmouth with the establishment of one of the first specialized American stocking factories. By 1850 there were over one hundred knitting machines in use in Portsmouth, the largest concentration north of Philadelphia. The failure of two of Portsmouth's knitting factories in the 1850's led to the spread of the industry to other places in New England, but the industry survived in Portsmouth through an increase in small independent frame shops. Around 1900 new, automatic, seamless sock machines brought all processes under the factory roof, and Portsmouth lost its last connection with the industry it had helped to create.
