Description:
Studies voting patterns in New Hampshire's Democratic presidential primary from 1968 to 2000. Presidential candidates have had to contend with changing patterns among Democratic voters, who have generally been either fairly conservative working-class voters or upscale reformers. Democrats once concentrated in New Hampshire's mill towns, but more and more reform-minded Democrats have moved into the state's towns and rural areas. As a result, fewer of New Hampshire's Democrats describe themselves as conservative. Nevertheless, candidates cannot afford to ignore either working-class Democrats or reformers.
