- Description:
- In 1951, New Hampshire governor Sherman Adams was nearing the end of his second term. He decided to stake his political future on backing Dwight D. Eisenhower for the Republican presidential nomination. Adams became Eisenhower's chief backer in the state, and his team generated a steady stream of pro-Eisenhower news releases. The general won a comfortable victory over Senator Robert A. Taft in the March 1952 New Hampshire primary. Adams went on to serve as assistant to the president from 1953 to 1958.
