- Description:
- Profile House, a resort hotel in New Hampshire's Franconia Notch, burned down in 1923, triggering a chain of events that led to the area's designation as a state park. The founder of the hotel company, Frank Abbott, wanted to give Franconia Notch to the state for a park, but the Abbotts also considered selling their timber rights to recoup losses from the fire. The Abbotts wanted $500,000 for the notch. The state put up $200,000 in 1925. The Society for the Protection of New Hampshire's Forests raised the rest in conjunction with the New Hampshire Federation of Women's Clubs. On 15 September 1928, the Franconia Notch State Forest Reservation and Memorial Park's dedication ceremony took place.
