- Description:
- Jane Means Appleton (1806-63) was the daughter of Jesse Appleton, who became president of Bowdoin College when Jane was about a year old. He died when Jane was 13. She married Franklin Pierce in 1834. Despite frail health, she spent the early years of her marriage shuttling between New England and Washington, living in boarding houses. Jane had three children. One died in infancy, one of typhus at age four, while the third, Benjamin, died in a train derailment before his parents' eyes, at age 11. Jane did not take part in any state functions for two years after his death, but when the mourning ended, Jane assumed her responsibilities as much as her health would permit. Surviving letters to close relatives and friends indicate that Franklin and Jane Pierce shared a loving and supporting relationship.
