- Description:
- Benjamin Pierce, one of the leaders of the revolutionary generation in New Hampshire, was also a major influence on his son, President Franklin Pierce. Born in Massachusetts, the elder Pierce was a farmer there when the Revolution began. He took part in the Battle of Bunker Hill and wintered at Valley Forge in 1777-78. In 1786, he migrated to New Hampshire, and in 1789, he was elected to the New Hampshire legislature, where he served for 13 years. In 1827, he became governor of the state. A Jacksonian Democrat, Pierce believed in the "social virtues" of justice, moderation, temperance, industry, and frugality. Although he inspired all of his sons to perform military service, he opposed a standing army because it was associated with "old world corruption.
