In 1997 the New Hampshire Supreme Court ruled that the state's obligation to "cherish" public education meant to fund it. The use of the term "cherish" derives from John Adams's crafting of the Massachusetts constitution of 1780. The Massachusetts and New Hampshire constitutions are strikingly similar. The New Hampshire constitution uses precisely the same language used by Adams in drafting the Massachusetts constitution in 1779.
