Description:
Benjamin Crackbone Champney, well-known landscape painter, helped establish New Hampshire's White Mountains as a nationally important artists' destination. Born in Ipswich, New Hampshire, Champney trained in Paris in the 1840s. His 1,200-foot panorama of the Rhine (1848) established his reputation as a talented and versatile painter, although it was not a financial success. In the 1850s works by Champney and his group inspired other artists to paint in New Hampshire's North Conway area. From the 1860s until the end of the century Champney and his wife summered at North Conway.
