Description:
Edward Tuck (1842-1938) amassed a fortune in international banking, retired at the age of 39, and then devoted much of the rest of his life to philanthropy. Tuck's interest in philanthropy reflected the views of such wealthy individuals of his generation as Andrew Carnegie, who believed it was a disgrace to die rich. Tuck's native New Hampshire benefited handsomely from his generosity. He provided considerable support to Phillips Exeter Academy and Dartmouth College, where he studied. Tuck and his wife lived much of their lives in France, where they died.
