Description:
The sculptural group which graces the portal of the New Hampshire Historical Society's building in Concord is recognized as a great work, but its creation was fraught with problems. Daniel Chester French (1850-1931), considered one of America's greatest monumental sculptors in his lifetime, created the work. French came up with his own design, but then made changes and had difficulty completing the work in time for the dedication of the building on 23 November 1911.
