A generous donor made possible the construction of a new building for the New Hampshire Historical Society in Concord in the early 1900s but the society still had to struggle with a number of problems after raising funds. William C. Todd (1823-1903) and Benjamin Ames Kimball (1833-1920) persuaded philanthropist Edward Tuck to provide most of the funding required for the building, a granite structure of a classical Greek style. Construction began in 1909. Many battles with the builders followed before the building was officially opened in 1911.
