Description:
The article discusses the coaching parades held in the resort towns of Bethlehem and North Conway, New Hampshire in the late 19th century. The parades are described in detail, and discussed both as a promotional event for the tourist industry in the White Mountains and as a reflection of American culture more broadly. The decoration of the horse-drawn coaches is discussed, as are the procession routes, the parade grand marshals, and the eventual decline of the parades as they grew too expensive and time-consuming. Several pages of images are also included.
