Scope and Content:
This is a collection of sermons written and given by the Reverend Gad Newell (1764-1859). Most were written for the members of the Congregational Church in Nelson, NH, during his tenure as minister there between 1789 and 1840, but some were given elsewhere. Newell annotated each sermon with the biblical text that was the basis for his talk and the date(s) and place(s) he delivered it. He preached about such topics as moral law, observation of the Sabbath, obedience to the laws of one's country, parents' duties towards their children, the temperance movement, Christian fellowship, and duties of gospel ministers. Other than a single letter from a niece describing her conversion experience, there is no personal information or material. An unknown researcher or librarian made notes summarizing each sermon. These are filed at the end of the collection.
