- Provenance:
- Born in 1914 in Hanover, NH, Edgar Hayes Hunter Jr. (1914-1995) was a student at Dartmouth College and a competitive skier when he designed this poster around 1935 for the State Planning and Development Commission in Concord. He was also one of five students from Dartmouth chosen to represent the United States at the 1936 Winter Olympics, held from February 6 to 16 at the German villages of Garmisch and Partenkirchen. Unfortunately Hunter hit a rock during practice and did not end up competing in Men's Alpine Skiing, which had become an Olympic sport for the first time that year. After graduating from Dartmouth with an AB in education in 1938, he earned a BA in architecture from Harvard in 1941. In 1950 he earned an M.Ed. from Dartmouth, and would later earn a master's degree in architecture from Harvard in 1970. In 1943 he married Margaret King (1919-1999), whom he had met at Harvard. She earned an AB from Wheaton College in 1941, did postgraduate work at the Smith College School of Architecture from 1941 to 1942 and then the Harvard Graduate School of Design from 1942 to 1945. The couple settled in Hanover in 1945 where they taught at Dartmouth, designed several campus buildings, and ran an architectural firm. They moved to Raleigh, North Carolina, in 1966, where they continued to teach, design houses, and pursue other business ventures.
