Adelaide Palmer was born in 1851 to farmers Henry and Rosette Palmer, and grew up in Piermont, New Hampshire. In the late 1870s and early 1880s she worked in Concord and Manchester as an artist before enrolling at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston in 1882. In Boston she studied with painter John Joseph Enneking (1841-1916). Palmer divided her time between Boston and Piermont, working as an artist and teacher. In her painting she focused on landscapes and still lifes. The drawing was supplied by Palmer to Effie M. Thorndike (1876-1934) for an article she wrote profiling the artist in the May 30, 1896 issue of the Concord Monitor.
