- Description:
- Powder Horn that belonged to Amos Abbot (1754-1834) of Concord, NH, c. 1776. The horn is carved down to a darker layer of horn near the end with three raised rings followed by another dark layer of horn. A carved sawtooth design separates the dark horn from the main area of carved decoration. The rest of the horn is decoratively carved with figures, animals, two ships and a floral pattern. Some of the figures are fighting each other and others are hunting animals. There is one group of soldiers marching with a cannon towards a pond filled with ducks. The horn is carved with the inscription "INDEPENDENCE: JULY 4th 1776 / A A H H 1776 / LIBERTY / AMOS ABBOT." There is a wood plug at the wide end. The surface of the horn is coated in an old layer of varnish. The decoration of the horn appears to be by the same hand as a horn (1866.001) owned by Amos's brother, John Abbot (1756-1779).
