This pocket notebook or aide-memoire is a souvenir sold at or near the Twin Mountain House in the village of Twin Mountain in the town of Carroll, NH. Brothers Asa and Oscar Barron purchased a farmhouse in 1867-1868 and began accepting boarders. The following year they built adjacent to the farmhouse a large L-shaped three-story hotel with a mansard roof that could house 200 guests. The arrival of the Boston, Concord & Montreal Railroad to the village in 1873 prompted the Barrons to enlarge the west end and rear ell of the hotel in 1873-1874, which boosted occupancy to nearly 300 guests. The hotel greeted some famous individuals over the years including presidents Grant, Hayes, Arthur, Harding, and Coolidge. Henry Ward Beecher and Harriet Beecher Stowe were guests for 17 seasons. Situated on a bluff over what is now the intersection of Route 3 and Route 302, the Twin Mountain House operated through the 1959 season and was torn down in 1960.
