Twenty-one missions were founded / from 1769 to 1823, largely through the efforts of the devoted Padre / Junipero Serra. With secularization about 1835 their prosperity was / suddenly halted; the priests were dismissed, the Indians abused and cor- / rupted, and the buildings abandoned.
