- Provenance:
- Based on reference to use of this banner at a rally of the Whig Young Men's Convention of Hillsborough County in Amherst, NH, on April 15, 1840, it was probably created by an as yet unidentified member of the Nashua Whig Association during the spring of 1840. It was also used at Whig party rallies in Nashua and Concord prior to the election held from October 30 to December 2, 1840. Record of the banner next appears in 1912 when a Nashua Telegraph newspaper article reported it as owned by Andrew J. Tuck (1845-1918), son of Samuel and Mary (Foster) Tuck, an insurance agent and a member of the Republican City Committee of Nashua. It eventually became part of a collection of American presidential political memorabilia gifted to the University of Hartford, West Hartford, CT, by J. Doyle DeWitt over a dozen years starting in 1959. The banner was sold to the donors from Heritage Auctions, Dallas, TX, March 19-20, 2022, Inaugural J. Doyle DeWitt Collection of Americana & Political Signature® Auction #6246; Lot 43043.
