- Sarah "Sally" Keniston was born in 1787, one of three daughters of David Keniston and Betsey Dearborn of Northfield, NH. She married Ephraim Cross (1785-1849), a son of Stephen Cross and Hannah Marsh, who had settled in Northfield prior to 1785. Ephraim and Sally Cross settled on and farmed a third of her father's homestead, having divided his estate among his three daughters, Sally, Ruth and Polly. The Crosses raised four daughters and two sons. A c. 1865 tintype portrait of Sally Cross is part of the gift. The plate and tintype descended to her daughter, Mary G. Cross (1825-1900), who married Henry Johnson and lived in Warner, NH. Like an eyestone (2018.023) given to the Society in 2018, the plate and tintype were among the family heirlooms left to the donor by his mother, Polly B. Johnson (1915-2018) of Concord, NH.
