- Provenance:
- According to a handwritten note taped to the back of the chest, it was made by Daniel Everett (1791-1876) of New London, NH, the brother of Emily (Everett) Gates (1787-1862), probably around the time of her marriage to John Gates in 1810. Born in New London, Daniel Everett was the son of Jonathan and Mary (Messenger) Everett. He married Rachel Clement in 1818 and worked as a cabinetmaker in New London until the 1840s when he moved to Sanbornton, NH. By 1860 Daniel and Rachel Everett had moved to Salisbury, NH, where they lived near their son, Daniel R., until shortly before his death on August 9, 1876. Daniel Everett and his brothers David and Jonathan were anti-slavery advocates.
This miniature chest is related to a Federal style bow-front Daniel Everett chest of drawers (2017.039) purchased by the Society in 2017. A note on the 2017 purchase refers to a small bureau, probably this miniature chest, made by Everett for his sister: "Made by / Daniel Everett / for his sister / Emily Everett Gates / mirrors & small bureau".
Like the chest of drawers purchased by the Society in 2017, this example also descended from Emily Everett Gates to her daughter, Almira D. E. (Gates) Raleigh (1827-1897) of New London, Warner, and Boscawen; then to her daughter, Sarah Emma (Raleigh) Blanchard (1852-1944) of Boscawen, Concord, Waterford, CT, and Worcester, MA; then to her daughter, Cornelia Elizabeth (Blanchard) Wheeler (1884-19 ) of Worcester, MA, Brooklyn, NY, and Boscawen; then to her daughter, Dorothy Raleigh (Wheeler) Sanborn (1917-2013) of Boscawen; finally to her daughter, Elizabeth (Sanborn) Millard (b. 1944) of Boscawen. The miniature chest of drawers was probably purchased from the heirs of Dorothy Sanborn by an unidentified person after her death in 2013. - Credit Line:
