Little is known of his early years beyond his study at the Gorham (ME) Academy during the mid-1860s and travel on sea voyages to Europe with his father and mother. He is also supposed to have studied art in Paris. Stanwood settled in Portland during the 1870s, where he found commissions for ship paintings, seascapes and landscape paintings. His paintings, landscapes, and portraits are represented in the collections of the Maine Historical Society, Portland Museum of Art, and Portland Public Library. Stanwood died of consumption on June 20, 1888 in Gorham, ME, and was buried in the Western Cemetery, Portland, ME. The painting was owned by the Signal Corporation (1983) prior to its purchase by the donor.
