In the 1840s, he established a studio in Boston and traveled to Maine, Vermont, the Berkshires, and the Catskills. In 1853, he married Mary Caroline Brooks (1829-1876) of Woburn, MA, and they purchased a home in North Conway, NH, where he spent summers producing and selling paintings to tourists. Champney traveled to Europe in 1841, 1847, and 1865 for study and inspiration. In America, he divided his time between homes in North Conway and Woburn. He died in Woburn at the age of 90.
