Emery N. Moore (1816-1890) and Charles H. Crosby (1824-1898) established the firm of Moore & Crosby at No. 1 Water Street, Boston, in 1852. They worked as printers, lithographers, and engravers until the firm dissolved by October 1, 1856. Specialty printers, they made a variety of custom products including business cards, invitations, and mourning ribbons. Printing in oil colors provided customers with richly colored products simulating oil painting. In this case, Moore & Crosby capitalized on the popularity of the new president by offering a color portrait of Franklin Pierce for sale.
