Provenance:
Ada A. Jewett likely made this drawing while a student at Kimball Union Academy, Meriden, NH, during the 1866-67 school year. Ada Adelia Jewett was born in Lebanon, NH, on April 11, 1849, the daughter of Calvin Dimmick Jewett (1825-1893) and Louisa Ruth (Kendall) Jewett (1821-1908). The family moved to New London, NH, in 1853, where Calvin Jewett operated a scythe factory, but the family returned to Lebanon in 1862. While attending Kimball Union Academy, 1866-1867, a member of the Junior Class, Ada learned drawing from Mary N. Nudd (Robinson) (1834-1913), who taught drawing and English. On May 12, 1868, Ada Jewett married neighbor and distant cousin, George C. Perkins (1839-1921), a furniture dealer in Lebanon. One of their children, Florence Gertrude Perkins (1877-1944), survived to adulthood, teaching mathematics at Lebanon High School. Ada Perkins also raised two children of her deceased sister, Ellen Maria Davis (1851-1882). One of them, Lon Jewett Davis (1880-1952), eventually made his home in Brattleboro, VT, where the drawings were recently purchased by the donor.
