The Coos and Essex Agricultural Society was organized to promote the improvement of agriculture in Coos County, NH, and Essex County, VT, and held its first fair in Lancaster on October 4-6, 1870. William D. Weeks and Henry O. Kent of Lancaster were among the founders of the Society. Representatives from 27 towns in the two counties served on the executive committee of the Society. By the early 20th century, the annual event had become popularly known as the "Lancaster Fair," where it continues to be held at the fair grounds and riding park on the north side of the village. On Tuesday, September 12, 1916, the fair opened and ran for four days. The fair featured a Children's Day, two days of horse racing, a day of baseball games, automobile and "Better Babies" shows, and entertainment by bicyclists, jugglers, horses, band concerts, balloon ascensions, and parachutists. Awards were made for farm animals as well as agricultural and domestic products.
