- Originally owned by Rev. Nicholas Gilman (1707-1748) and his wife, Mary Thing (1713-1789), of Durham, NH. Nicholas Gilman was the son of Judge Nicholas and Sarah (Clark) Gilman of Exeter. After receiving private tutoring at Newburyport, Gilman entered and graduated from Harvard College in 1724. He earned a master's degree from Harvard in 1727 and taught school while studying for the ministry. He married Mary Thing, daughter of Bartholomew and Sarah Thing, on October 22, 1730. Their children were Bartholomew; Nicholas, a merchant and patriot, who served as adjutant of the 3rd New Hampshire Regiment during the American Revolution; Rev. Tristram, minister at North Yarmouth, ME; Joseph, an attorney and pioneer in the settlement of the state of Ohio; Josiah; and John. Their grandsons, Nicholas Gilman, was a signer of the U. S. Constitution, and John Taylor Gilman, served as governor of the New Hampshire. A scholar, Gilman preached occasionally, assembled an extensive library of theology and philosophy books, and managed his farm and mercantile holdings. It was not until 1742 that he accepted the call to serve as the minister of the Congregational Church in Durham. Gilman was a friend and supporter of the Rev. George Whitefield (1714-1770), the English cleric and evangelist who toured North America during the 1740s and held a series of revivals that became part of the Great Awakening.
