- Provenance:
- The cartridge box (.01) and canteen (.02) were carried by an unidentified member of the Keene (NH) Light Infantry. Established around 1807, the Keene Light Infantry was incorporated in 1826. It was an independent infantry company organized and operated by a group of men in Keene. The organization, which survived through 1871, functioned as part of the state militia, but also served as an honor guard, escorting dignitaries during processions and celebrations, and as a social organization. The cartridge box and canteen may be part of a cache of labeled Keene Light Infantry equipment discovered during demolition of the Buffum Block in Keene in June 1890. These two pieces eventually became part of the American military collection assembled by William H. Guthman.
