Material:
Paper
Dimensions:
H-3 W-5.35 inches
Provenance:
From collection of Dr. Dorothy M. Vaughan (1904-2004), preservationist and collector of Portsmouth, N.H., artifacts.

Accompanied by a letter (now in the Dorothy M. Vaughan Papers at NHHS library) to Dorothy Vaughan from Charles T. Brewster, Pleasant Hill, TN, January 3, 1982. Mr. Brewster writes, "I am enclosing a little drawing of what I think must be a Portsmouth scene. Perhaps it was drawn by Samuel Rowell. You will see it is dated April 20, 1857, and I think he was living in Portsmouth at that time. You can give it to the Portsmouth Historical Society if they would like to have it...P.S. I have just noticed that there are initials (H.S.T.) at the bottom of the little sketch - so it was not done by Rowell. Perhaps the artist was a Tredick. 'Phoenix House' is the sign over the side door. Was there a 'Phoenix' in Portsmouth? Perhaps the picture is of the one in Concord."
